Art In Minecraft

I started playing Minecraft around 2015, but didn’t begin taking it seriously as an art medium till the end of 2017. It was also at that time I started uploading to my Minecraft channel to showcase my creative works within the game as well as teach others more about the medium. Here are just some of my many creations as well as useful building tips for beginners.

Build Showcase

A Dragon for Each Season

This was a series of dragon builds that took about a year to complete. Because I’ve always loved dragons, I felt the urge to make my own designs with a seasonal theming. Each build is my own original design that I first painted in photoshop before building a large-scale model in Minecraft.

Structures x Organics

What started out as an experiment, turned into its own build series where organic meets structure. Two builds so far have been completed with more planned for the future. Like all my builds, I try to be original by making my own concept art before building.

Biblical Portraits

This is an ongoing series where I recreate Biblical characters and scenes within Minecraft. It’s a lot of fun bringing the Bible to life in my own special way.

Other Builds

Many of my builds don’t belong to any particular series, but reflect other interests of mine. These are some favorites.

A Basic Building Workflow

Elven Character Design

1. Idea Phase
I prefer drawing out my ideas for each build. I also use this phase to figure out posing, layout, and composition of a build.

Pro Tip: To create a compelling 360 composition, make sure the focal point is not obstructed by neighboring elements

2. Modeling & Layout
The focus here is to map out proportions, poses, and the general models of the build using placeholder blocks.

Pro Tip: Don’t worry about detailing blocks at this phase unless it’s needed to help with proportions.

3. Texturing & Detailing
Once the modeling and layout is satisfactory, the last thing to do is add color and all the detailing blocks.

Pro Tip: To add more dynamics to your build, also consider lighting and shadows that are being cast on your build. Have the colors also resemble how it’s being lit.

4. Rendering or Screenshot
When sharing your works online, rendering the model in a 3d software like Blender is a great way to showcase your finished art. A simple screenshot using a favorite shader will also work.

Pro Tip: Use a low FOV when taking screenshots so the shapes appear more accurate.
